Where Is Your Head?
Like many of you, each morning when I wake I turn on the coffeemaker (nothing happens without caffeine) and radio to listen and the traffic reports and business news. To my fellow business owner, does it seem that most mornings, the travel around the beltway, during rush hour, is much less painful than listening to the business reports? The market is down, gas prices are up, housing sales are down, and unemployment is up…I think you get the idea. These factors affect how we conduct ourselves and our businesses everyday; my question to you, via Andrew Sherman’s quip is…where is your head…is it in the sky, the sand, or in your hands during this wild economic ride?
A few weeks ago “A Heady Economy” appeared in the Washington Business Journal. Several dozen local business leaders from varied businesses and organizations gathered to discuss surviving and thriving in the current economic climate. I eagerly read the article hoping to find “it” the solution that would enable my business to weather this storm; sorry to report that no panaceas were produced. What the article reinforced was the sentiment (perhaps cliché) that opportunity exists everywhere and especially where others see fear. With this mindset, I set out to communicate with some clients that previously I would not have considered. While still preliminary, some potentially promising results are on the horizon!
Because no one person is as smart as all of us combined, please share how your business evolved as a result of any stressor.
